For Sam, the thought of cool ocean air and warm sandy beaches provided the escape she needed from treatment plans. Throughout her wish experience the future beyond her illness became possible.
Samantha was a freshman in high school, athletic and completely healthy when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Her life since then has been nothing like her vision of life as a teenager; she has been in the hospital more than in school, enduring more than 3 dozen surgeries and almost as many prescriptions. She is currently on IV antibiotics, and her physical activity bans include some of her favorite things like running, figures skating, etc. She has been on crutches or in a wheel chair for the last year and a half, and her life has been circumscribed by her illness. She truly needed something to boost her spirits and renew her fighting spirit.
Sam’s Wish was to get as far away as possible from all the limitations dished out by her disease. She longed for someplace where the weather would be lovely and where she could escape being the “sick kid” for a bit and just relax in the warm sand. So she chose a Hawaiian cruise, finding a way around her need to not put stress on her leg and yet be able to see new sights and include her tightly knit family in her Wish. Aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines Sam and her parents and siblings began on Oahu and stopped at Maui, and included both the Hilo and Kona coasts of the big island of Hawaii, Kauai, then returning to Honolulu. Although she has lost so much of the typical high school experience, she will have this very special memory in return.
